- Background and objectives: In 2021, we conducted an internet-survey of coaches and families of Japanese junior rugby players regarding conditioning support. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of teams providing nutrition support to Japanese junior rugby players. Methods: This web-based cross-sectional study recruited participants using snowball sampling, informed them of the URL to access the survey screen, and asked them to respond. The evaluation items included the coach’s age, team’s competitive goal level, region, player’s grade, number of players, and implementation of non-nutritional conditioning support. Non-nutritional conditioning support comprised of 13 categories: first aid; condition management and infectious disease control; anti-doping; medical check-up; strength training; injury prevention; rehabilitation for injury recovery; biomechanics; performance assessment; psychological; sleep; countermeasures for heat, cold, and high altitude; and female-specific health problem. Results: The survey included 778 participants (531 men) comprising 338 coaches, 324 families, and 116 participants in both roles. In total, 212 (27.2%) participants answered that they provided nutrition support, whereas 566 (72.8%) answered that they did not. The higher the competitive goal level, the higher the percentage of nutrition support provided (p<0.001). In Tokyo, team provided more nutrition support than those from other regions (p<0.01). Teams that included high school students were more likely to provide nutrition support (p<0.001), whereas teams that included junior high school or younger students were less likely to provide nutrition support (p<0.001). Those who responded providing nutrition support provided other conditioning support, with significant differences (p<0.001) across the 12 items except for female-specific health problem. Conclusions: Our findings showed that nutrition support status differs depending on team characteristics. Team characteristics may be necessary to increase nutrition support for junior rugby players. Keywords: cross-sectional study; rugby; junior athletes; sports nutrition; nutritional support Conflict of Interest: The authors have nothing to declare.
